Help me to locate my grandfather

I am trying to locate my grandfather here is some information on this special person.Robert E Moore born approximately 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, Franklin County. In 1949 He and Rose I. Thibault (many spellings) Had a son named Robert Emile Moore (my Father). At that time Robert was 22 Years old. On my fathers birth certificate it said the Robert E was in the US NAVY at that time, and was a Chief Petty Officer. I have also been told that he was a Merchant Marine after the NAVY. (please email me have no idea merchant marine is.) It also stated that he resided in Cambridge, Massachucetts in 1949. Robert has one other son Francis and a daughter Joyce. I am told that he had served as a Chief Petty Officer in the US NAVY. I have contacted Ohio for birth records and they wrote to me and told me that there is no Robert E Moore born in 1926 or 1927..
